Faridah Hashim

Daughter, Taman Merdeka, Melaka

"My mother is 79 and lives alone since my father passed. She was managing fine during the day but I worried constantly from work. After three months of the Companionship Programme, she actually tells me she enjoys Tuesdays and Thursdays now. She never used to have anything particular to look forward to on a weekday."

Krishnamurti Narayanan

Son, works in KL, family in Melaka

"I'm in KL five days a week and my parents are in Melaka. The Errand & Logistics programme has removed the stress of coordinating my father's weekly needs from a distance. The confirmation messages are something I did not expect to value so much — but knowing it is done takes a weight off. The only thing I would say is the initial setup took a week or two to settle into a proper routine."

Rozita Lim

Granddaughter, Bukit Baru, Melaka

"We arranged the Technology Connection Help for our grandmother so she could video call my uncle who is overseas. Siti came three times and was genuinely patient — I watched one of the sessions and she never once rushed Grandma or made her feel foolish. Grandma now calls my uncle on her own every Saturday evening."

Ahmad Yusof

Son, Bandar Hilir, Melaka

"My mother kept telling me she was fine and did not need anyone. We arranged just two mornings a week to start. By the second month she was asking whether the companion could come on Fridays too. She says she had forgotten what it felt like to have someone to talk to who was not in a hurry."

Priya Muthusamy

Daughter, Klebang, Melaka

"The errand coordination took some getting used to on my end — I had to actually plan out what I wanted done each week instead of reacting when something ran out. But after the first month it runs itself. My father's groceries arrive on schedule and I know it is handled. The shared calendar is the part I would tell other families about first."

Zulaika Rahman

Niece, Ayer Keroh, Melaka

"What I appreciated was that Norizan actually called me after the introductory visit to say what she had observed — what my aunt responded well to and what the companion would keep in mind. That kind of attention is not something I expected. I would say it is the main reason we chose to continue after the first month."

A closer look at three families

How each family came to Cempaka, what they arranged, and how it settled over time.

The Situation

A father living alone after his wife's passing

Mr Lim, 77, had managed independently for two years after his wife passed. His two adult children both worked in other states. The house was maintained but the days had grown very quiet, and outings to the market had become infrequent.

What Was Arranged

Companionship three mornings a week, plus weekly grocery runs

The family combined the Daytime Companionship Programme with the Errand & Logistics programme. A companion was present on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings; grocery and market runs were coordinated for Tuesday.

After Three Months

A settled routine and noticeably more conversation

Mr Lim began initiating conversation topics for the morning sessions — he started a small garden on the back step which the companion helped him tend to. His children said the end-of-day notes gave them context that phone calls alone never had.

The Situation

A grandmother who wanted to see her grandchildren abroad

Puan Hamidah, 82, had two grandchildren studying in Australia. She had a tablet that family members had set up, but she had never managed to use it without someone sitting beside her. Calls happened only when someone visited.

What Was Arranged

Technology Connection Help over four sessions

The programme began with a device review and a first practice call. Two further sessions followed over two weeks at Puan Hamidah's pace. A large-print guide was laminated and placed beside the tablet. A refresher visit was made four weeks later.

After the Programme

Regular Saturday evening calls without any assistance

Puan Hamidah now calls her grandchildren independently every Saturday. Her daughter noted she had started referring to the sessions herself to explain to neighbours how to use similar applications.

The Situation

A retired couple where one partner had reduced mobility

Encik Rajan, 75, managed most household tasks but found grocery runs and the occasional appointment increasingly tiring to coordinate alone. His wife had reduced mobility and could not accompany him easily. Family lived in Seremban.

What Was Arranged

Recurring weekly errand plan, adjusted over two months

The errand programme began with a weekly grocery run and one appointment coordination per fortnight. The shared calendar was reviewed with the family monthly and adjusted as needs shifted.

Ongoing

A predictable weekly rhythm that the couple relies on

Both Encik Rajan and the family in Seremban describe the arrangement as one they no longer have to think about actively — it simply runs. The family said that knowing the calendar is maintained means they can plan their own visits without worrying about logistics.
